Storing camp gear used to be a mess—until I found a system that actually worked for both at home and on the road.
I’ve tried a lot of ways to pack for camping over the years—totes, crates, duffels—but the system I use now is simple, durable, and makes setting up at camp feel less chaotic. It’s centered around the Gregory Alpaca Gear Box 45, which I use for everything from Snow Peak gear to cook kits, lighting, and those random items that never seem to have a home.
These bins are great because they double as storage and transport—you pack them once, and they stack neatly in the car. No repacking. No scrambling.

There are a ton of bins out there—Target, Walmart, and all the usual suspects. But I discovered this one while walking through REI. I saw them stacked near the front of the store and immediately noticed the blue. I’m always drawn to blue things. But it was the structure and how cleanly they stacked that sold me. I bought a few on the spot to try out for storing my gear.
The bins are structured but flexible, and they hold their shape even when they’re not full. The material is water-resistant, tough, and easy to clean. The lid zips shut and folds open completely, which makes access super easy whether you’re packing at home or reaching for something in the back of the car. They come in just one size—45 liters—which works perfectly for me. It fits easily in the trunk and stacks cleanly with other gear.
How I Break It Down
Right now, I use these bins mainly for storage—but they’re packed and ready to go when it’s time to head out. I plan to bring all three with me on my next camping trip, each with its own purpose:

Why It Works
Having everything in a set bin means I don’t have to think about it. I can grab and go, and unpacking at camp is fast and clean. It also keeps my Snow Peak gear in good shape—no dented mugs, no crushed lanterns.

The lids zip shut and stack flat, which helps a lot with storage at home too. It’s easily one of the best gearboxes for car camping I’ve found.

I don’t label mine, but if you’re just starting out, a simple tag or color-coded ribbon helps you remember what’s where.
Gregory also makes a 50L Alpaca Camp Box, which I plan to get next. It’s a bit more compact and ideal for organizing smaller items I’ll want quick access to when I’m on the road. I haven’t purchased it yet—but it’s on my list.
This has been one of the easiest gear decisions I’ve made—and one I’d absolutely buy again.
